Like Hollywood actors and actresses, Bollywood stars are not strangers to the plastic surgeon’s office.  Today, plastic surgery is becoming more popular among the Indian population, and not only with Bollywood stars.  Ethnic plastic surgery in general, has been on the rise in recent years.  In India alone, plastic surgery has reportedly increased by 15 percent over the last 3 years.

The increase in Indians choosing to go under the knife has extended over to the United States as well.  Dr. Usha Rajagopal, an Indian born plastic surgeon who has been performing plastic surgery in San Francisco for 15 years, has also noticed the drastic increase of Indian men and women seeking cosmetic procedures.  “There used to be a lot of stigma attached to plastic surgery in India, but that has definitely changed.  Plastic Surgery has become more socially acceptable,” says Dr. Usha Rajagopal, who graduated from medical school at the University of Texas, Dallas and completed her plastic surgery training at University of California San Francisco.  “Now I see Indian patients, both men and women, all the time.  Some of them actually fly into San Francisco from India for treatments at my practice.”

Which procedures are the most common among the Desi population (people of South Asian heritage who live outside of South Asia)?  “Desi women come to me for the same procedures that other women come to me for – breast implants, liposuction, tummy tucks, and all types of filler and injectable treatments, like Botox and Restylane,” says Dr. Usha Rajagopal.  A kind of total mommy makeover.

“A lot of male patients come to me for Gynecomastia surgery, which is male breast reduction surgery. This by far is the fastest growing surgery in my practice.  I see a lot of Desi male for this issue, and also men of all other ethnic and racial groups. Not only are more people, in general, seeking more plastic surgery procedures these days, but patients also tend to be younger now than years ago. Rhinoplasty (nose surgery), Laser Hair Removal, a full array of injectable fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm as well as Botox are very common procedures for the young Indian population in the Bay Area” says Dr Rajagopal
