As a practicing lawyer and fellow busy professional I understand the difficulties of managing a stressful work day. With the juggling of multiple appointments, rushing from place to place, and the added pressure to deliver consistently in the face of ever elapsing deadlines, while at the same time trying to stay fresh and alert for each activity or appointment. How many of us have been in this very scenario, trying to handle a difficult day without exhibiting noticeable effects? Who hasn’t felt the desire to collapse from the onset of fatigue and exhaustion as the days’ events continue to unfold, sometimes in unexpected ways, all the while we feel the eroding away of our energy to perform at the highest levels because we feel as we have no control of what’s unfolding before us? I can honestly say after 10 years of practicing law, I have felt the same way, and figuring out a good coping mechanism to deal with life’s every day challenges so you can avoid stress which will wear you down and affect your life negatively. Challenging, but, not impossible! A technique that I have been using quite frequently is mapping my day in advance. I was first turned onto the method through reading the book, The Secret, a must read for anyone desiring to wrestle hold of negative thinking, and truly a life changing, life altering text that explains handling negative thoughts in detail. The process is quite simple and as easy to follow and practice as you would when you map out your days’ events using a calendar. First, the night before, and preferably right before you go to sleep, when those stressful thoughts of the next days’ events enter your mind, take control by envisioning not only the grocery list of events, but the desired outcomes as well. Create as vivid a picture of the events and outcomes as possible, and absorb the feeling of happiness, satisfaction, etc. you receive from accomplishing your desires. (at a minimum, you’ll at least feel a bit better about the next day by easing the anxiety associated with thinking about the next days’ events you have usually followed in the past.) Second, repeat the process briefly in the morning immediately upon waking, and again creating the vivid imagery and associated feelings of accomplishment. Third, keep focusing on your images throughout the day, and always reset it before beginning each task during the day. By resetting before each task you will keep focused on the positive imagery and feelings to get you through the day, clearly keeping you positively focused in the task. If for some reason things get a bit off course from the exact image you desire, remember reset and keep focused on the positive images and feelings you generated previously to get through the situation. Remember, things aren’t as bad as they seem, or as your mind makes them. Fourth, and finally, remember to express gratitude and thanks for everything that happened throughout the day as you planned! Good luck and good visualizing! Rob Dintaman Motivational and Success for Life Coach www.motivationalandsuccessforlifecoaching.com/sq |
