What to do about insomnia? First off, you should consider changing your lifestyle and habits. Find out what is keeping you awake at night. Replace those bad habits with good ones. Only use your bed for sleep and sex. You want to train your body to know that when you get on the bed, it's time to sleep. Also, only go to bed when you feel tired and you need sleep. If you can't get to sleep. get up and go to a different room in your home. Stay awake until you do feel tired. You might be thinking, "shouldn't I try to get some sleep? Well, chances are, if you try to go to sleep when you aren't tired, you are just going to toss and turn. Might as well do something that will force you to become tired, such as reading. Also, you want to train your body to associate your bed with sleep, and not insomnia and the frustration you feel because of it. As I try to show you what to do about insomnia, I also want you to do what you can to relax both your mind and your body. Many times, insomnia is the result of your mind being worried about something. Physical tension is the cause of insomnia for other people. In order to quiet a racing mind, try meditation, breathing exercises, and mental relaxation. Imagine your feet being very relaxed, and then that relaxation moves up your entire body. This is known as progressive muscle relaxation. You can learn these relaxation techniques in behavior therapy sessions. |
