Many people experience trouble sleeping. There can be numerous factors affecting sleeping habits. Stress, tension, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and exercise late in the day can all trigger bad sleep. For sleep to be restorative, we need several complete sleep cycles every night. Many of us don’t get the complete sleep cycles because we have trouble sleeping. However, there are several different ways that we can improve our sleep habits. One way to improve your sleep habits is to create a comfort zone. This is the time where you have to decide what you find soothing and what you find bothersome at night. For instance some people enjoy listening to soft music at night while others require complete and utter silence. So find out what makes you feel comfortable. Also be sure that your bed, your sheets, and your room temperature agree with your sleeping needs. Attempt to keep your mind free from stress and tension at night. When you are sleepy you should not be alert. When you are alert thinking about something, your body will produce stress hormones that will keep you awake. There are also some natural sleep remedies that aid in achieving a good night’s sleep. A glass of warm milk contains sleep inducing chemicals known as tryptophan. Other herbal supplements, such as valerian and chamomile tea, have also been studied for their sleep inducing benefits. Some people also undergo certain relaxation and meditation techniques to help them fall asleep faster. No matter what you chose to do in order to better your sleep habits, remember to reduce your stress levels, reduce caffeine intake, and create a pleasant night time atmosphere. Also try to avoid exercise three to four hours prior to bed time because your body needs time to bring down its temperatures before sleep. So the next time you can’t sleep, try incorporating some of these techniques into your bed time routine. |
