When searching for ways to treat winter illnesses, think of the benefits of herbal remedies to help. Doesn’t it seem that every one gets colds and flu viruses in the winter months? There are herbs you can use to help you stay healthy through the cold and flu season.

Herbal remedies can add great benefits to treat winter illnesses. Even the upcoming H1N1 pandemic is a virus; therefore, herbs can help you avoid it or cause your case to be lighter in case you do contact it. Herbs actually speed up recovery once you get sick. Before you begin any medical programs, be sure to consult your physician.

One of my favorite herbs is garlic. I love to cook with it, and when eaten raw, garlic can be used to fight bacteria such as streptococci. It can help clear chest congestion and reduce fevers, too. You can mix grind garlic and mix it with oil to apply to cuts and abrasions, too. It speeds healing of the wounds. I know, eating garlic raw can cause you to lose friends, so you can buy it in pill and liquid form as well. At the first signs of flu or cold symptoms, begin to eat garlic. Keep some garlic around in pill form and also raw.

Herbs boost the immune system, too. Along with some of the herbs, take elderberry concentrate daily. You can take a few drops in your drinks during the day. However, you want to consume 1/2 teaspoon twice daily. You can find elderberry online and at health stores, but read the labels to be sure it is the all natural product.

Another immune builder is Echinacea (or purple coneflower); however, you do not want to take this herb more than seven days. So it’s probably best to use it after you feel flu symptoms coming on.

Echinacea fights infections in the body, and it has anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial properties, too. For Echinacea to do its work, start taking the herb as soon as you feel like you are coming down with the cold or flu. Take it every six to eight hours until the symptoms are gone; however, do not take it more than seven days.

Never give Echinacea to children!

We’ve included a few benefits of herbal remedies to treat winter illnesses. In our next article we will look further at the benefits of herbs to combat those deplorable symptoms of seasonal flu viruses and colds. We will talk about the benefits of natural products over medicinal ones especially to fight colds. Eat healthy my friends.
